This has been a peeve of mine since day one as a driver. Sure, I can see waiting to let someone in if its stop-and-go traffic. It’s not like the bottleneck is going anywhere if there’s another car between you and it, and there’s a chance you’re helping to unplug a side street that wouldn’t have been congested if it wasn’t for the plug on yours. But if you slow down to let someone in at a merge lane, yield (or worse, an added lane!), FUCK YOU. Just because they were too stupid to grab a gap, match traffic speed, and go without stopping doesn’t mean the rest of us don’t deserve to get where we’re going too.
It’s the same thing with allowing people to go out of turn at four-way stops, etc. Ignoring traffic rules can and does cause flow problems, and as we saw above can also be a safety problem.
Yes, I do tend to be a pretty aggressive driver, and will admit I can get a little road-ragey at times, but only when someone does something stupid that puts me at risk, like stopping in an added-lane merge, because I’M the one who’s going to get rear-ended (and I have! But very lightly) when you effectively stop dead in the middle of the road for no reason at all. Saskatoon had so many of those added-lanes and I’ve seen so many people come to compete stops it’s mind-boggling.
